In the early 1990s Ellis & Moore became heavily involved in the self build market producing structural design using the Walter Segal principles. This has further developed now into a factory built cassette system for houses and flats up to four storeys in height.
Working in conjunction with Jon Broome, formerly of Architype the concept has been developed in several projects. Initially the client was David Matzdorf of Community Housing Association who wanted to build a new house in timber. This building was designed with a green roof and piled foundations using an innovative solution to eliminate the use of reinforced concrete ground beams by incorporating restraints within the timber floor structures. This project subsequently received a Civil Trust Award.
Two schemes are now complete in Woking and Guildford in Surrey using the above system. Modifications were made during the construction to accommodate specialist contractors’ method of working. As a result of the modifications, the design has moved forward and a package deal is available for Housing Associations and private developers to produce high quality timber framed housing. It is anticipated more schemes will be undertaken using the above techniques to construct three and four storey developments.
