The Bear Pit, Union Works | Borough
The Bear Pit is a located on London’s Bankside at the very heart of an area steeped in historical significance within moments of some of the worlds most famous and exciting cultural attractions. Twenty three exceptional apartments built on the site of a sixteenth century theatre and bear baiting arena.
The luxury Design and Build multi-storey mixed use commercial and 23 high class residential unit development, with a restaurant unit on the ground floor is located on a site is steeped in history which means at various stages of the construction there will be requirements for access by the Museum of London to investigate the remains of the bear baiting and cock fighting arena which once stood on this site; it is thought to be one possible location of the original Globe Theatre. The remains found during the initial groundwork phase of the building determined the location of the pile foundations, with the remains "preserved in-situ" for future generations.
The site is an extremely compact city centre location with a full plot build out. The works are also overshadowed by the modern Globe Theatre reconstruction and its surrounding buildings.
The structure is of a traditional concrete form with facade cladding of timber, render, brick and curtain walling elements. The works also include the like for like restoration and repair of a Grade II listed building the workshop and engineering premises built for David and Andrew Derrin in 1867.
