Denham Studios involves a large scale residential development, comprising three separate phases, of which we were employed to undertake the structural engineering design for phases 1 and 2. These phases included the refurbishment of an existing Grade II listed film studio for high specification residential use, and the construction of 3No. new build 4-5 storey blocks of flats.
Phase 1 comprised the film studio refurbishment. Located to the West of the site, immediately adjacent to the entrance to the development, the film processing laboratory associated with the original film studio complex was converted for residential use. Constructed in 1936, the building was designed by Walter Gropius and Maxwell Fry and was Grade II listed in 1985. It consisted of a steel frame with a combination of pot and beam and reinforced concrete floors. The major structural works consisted of the formation of a large atrium with internal cantilevered walkways serving the flats and a large span structural glass roof supported on 720mm deep glass fins. A precast concrete helical staircase designed by us and constructed and installed by Millbank, gave access to the two levels of cantilevered walkway.
Phased consisted of new build flats. We undertook the design of these three blocks positioned to the North and East of the existing film studio building. Block A comprised a 4 storey load-bearing masonry construction over RC ground floor slab and RC Basement. Block B is 3 storeys of load-bearing masonry construction over RC frame ground floor and Block C is a 4 storey masonry building.
