Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust

We have worked with the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust over a number of years on a number of projects. Notably a new £4 million cardiac research centre for Harefield’s world famous heart research team. The building provides accommodation for several research teams led by the eminent heart surgeon, Prof. Sir Magdi Yacoub. The interior is fitted out to provide state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, tailored to the requirements of each research team. The design team managed an intensive series of user group meetings to ensure that these requirements were thoroughly understood and interpreted correctly.

Harefield Hospital

This involved investigating, assessing, scheduling and inspecting concrete repairs to the 1950’s built main hospital buildings (300m of elevation) at Harefield Hospital. Initially we worked with the Capital Works manager to investigate the reasons for the spalling concrete band features and window surrounds. This revealed that the main reason for the extensive defects was the forceful and inappropriate method of removal of the old Crittall windows carried out during the window replacement in the past. We scheduled targeted repairs thus limiting the disruption and aggravation to the staff and patients and mitigating the extent and costs of the works.

Two seven storey external Fire Escape stairs and balconies at the Brompton have been assessed as needing conversion to patient bed evacuation standards (3x8m & 3x20m approx.). Working closely with the Architect from the outset we have identified the changes required floor by floor and are in the process of presenting these to the Client and staff. The works involve lowering of the windowsills to floor levels to afford level exit to protected lobbies at each floor, replacement of the superstructure and justification of existing foundations to mitigate construction time and cost. Services protection will also be addressed.
