Gainsborough Studios | Islington
A landmark development with architectural design by Munkenbeck + Marshall, Gainsborough Studios is a mixed use project which includes 280 new build apartments, retail and restaurant space. Consisting of four seperate buildings situated around a central courtyard and sculpture garden, with a canal side walk way, bridges and a cafe restaurant, the original Gainsborough red brick building has been maintained and revived as a modern film studio. The project also includes the refurbishment of old movie studio space used by Alfred Hitchcock. 25% of the residential area is affordable housing for the Southern Housing Corporation. There are two levels of parking below the entire project. The main tower element is 14 stories. The public can pass through the project thus joining the public park with the new canalside walkway.
The four buildings are grouped around a square containing a huge semi submerged head of Alfred Hitchcock by sculptor Anthony Donaldson. Ellis & Moore acted as CDM Coordinators, Civil and Structural Engineers for the project.
